For What Its Worth
Computing stories, Software
vs. Chaos
In the early days of computing a company wanted to organize their product
line. Inventory was out of control and they were looking at a major
software installation to organize and track their inventory of parts.
First they evaluated what they wanted the software to organize and control.
They realized their products had over 100 motors, the vast majority were
similar and had minor differences. After a short analysis they
realized all their products would work with just 5 motors. They
simplified and re-designed their product line to use the 5 motors.
After vastly simplifying the product line sales and profit increased.
After the changes, the cost and size of the software dropped dramatically.
Once you fix the chaos, software can be effective.
