Online Video Thoughts

Online videos have a great ability to teach, enlighten and encourage billions.  The sad thing is that money, mindless fervor and lack of sense can overcome this.  Do we want to be entertained and taught or trapped by videos that are in the end the mental equivalent of piano playing kittens?

What makes a good video?  I think it is good, accurate, honest story telling or education.  What makes a poor video? It is equivalent to explaining the limits of stupidity, there are no limits.   The following are a few things that I think make poor videos.

  1. Sponsored videos.  No matter how ethical you are, it can make you avoid or change what you say.  Even a word or two can compromise you.
  2. Doing things to lengthen the video to get more add time.
  3. Deep dive into simple explanations.
  4. Give a long detailed history with little useful information.
  5. Repeating the same information over and over.
  6. Doing crazy projects just to get viewers.
  7. Use of AI to add to the story line, or read the script.
  8. Give 1st person, 2nd person or whatever perspective when there is no way to know such information. 
  9. Use pictures or videos that are of other things over and over.
  10. Fail to tell the full date of an event.
  11. Guess about the facts.
  12. Interpret facts poorly.
  13. Skew the data.
  14. Lie just a little to enhance drama.
  15. Lie a lot.  Make up stories and act as if they are true.
  16. Propaganda
  17. Repeat unsupported theories, stories etc. Say it over and over with authority trying to make it sound true.
  18. Keep your story one sided and leave out common sense information.
  19. Exaggerate so a raindrop seems like a thunderstorm.
  20. Acting as if major problems with a rebuild/restoration were a sudden surprise.
  21. Lots of non-sequitur chit chat to take up time.
  22. Fail to aggressively edit the content of the video.
  23. Demonizing the past, others etc. just to make your position look better.
  24. Act stupid to connect with the "common person".
  25. Anytime a video contains the following phrases:
    1. They don't want you to know...
    2. What (Doctors, Teachers, Engineers, and on) don't know...
    3. They are keeping it secret...
    4. What you didn't know...
    5. This long hidden secret...
    6. The real truth about...
    7. I have never seen this...
    8. You will never believe...
    9. This cheap device will save you...
    10. Sasquatch...
  26. Forgetting to take your hyperactivity medication before shooting the video.

The Internet can be a fun diversion, don't let it be your life.
